Brazil. GALP invests millions in innovation and decarbonization laboratory

The fifth largest oil and gas producer in Brazil detailed in a statement that the Laboratory for Innovation and Decarbonization by Galp (Id.Lab), in partnership with the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro (UFRJ), spans 5,000 square meters. It features “specialized laboratories, high-resolution electron microscopy areas, 3D printers for prototyping, catalytic reactors for CO2 capture and use, hydrogen, mass spectrometers, and complete pilot plants for hydrotreatment and Fluid Catalytic Cracking (FCC).”

Located at the Technology and Research Center at LIPCAT on Ilha do Fundão, the laboratory launches with projects ranging from exploration and production activities (upstream), refining, and final product production activities, such as low-carbon fuels. These projects also focus on optimizing industrial operations, developing sustainable fuels, and reducing emissions across the entire energy production chain.

Moreover, the laboratory—starting with a team of approximately 70 researchers, engineers, and specialists dedicated to projects funded by the company in partnership with UFRJ—joins the Id.Lab network, “which operates a sister unit at the Sines refinery in Portugal,” the group noted.

Galp anticipates the new laboratory to produce over 20 scientific publications annually, five new patents, and to become a platform for technology transfer in the energy industry.

“Here we develop technologies that directly drive current businesses, from upstream to refining, and pave the way for new energy vectors such as green hydrogen and sustainable aviation fuels,” emphasized the scientific head of Id.Lab, Professor João Monnerat.

Present in Brazil since 2000, Galp is involved in several projects, including partnerships in the Santos basin, which holds the world’s largest known accumulation of oil and natural gas in ultra-deep waters.

Galp reported a profit of 973 million euros in the first nine months of the year, an increase of 9% from the same period in 2024, with a record of 407 million euros in the third quarter (+53%).
