A 31-year-old Brazilian man died Thursday afternoon after jumping into the Douro River at the Porto Rei river beach in São João da Fontoura, Resende municipality. Another person was injured.
A statement released on Friday by the National Maritime Authority (AMN) indicated that the man suffered “cardiorespiratory arrest after jumping from a pontoon into the Douro River.”
The alert that “two people had jumped into the river water” and “gotten trapped in the algae” was issued at 3:51 p.m. by the Lisbon Maritime Search and Rescue Coordination Center (MRCC Lisboa).
Upon arrival at the scene, it was found that the victims had been pulled from the water by bystanders present at the beach area, as explained in the note. “Resuscitation maneuvers were immediately initiated by the Emergency and Resuscitation Medical Vehicle (VMER) team,” but the situation could not be reversed.
The death was declared by the VMER doctor, and after contact with the Public Prosecutor’s Office, the body was transported by firefighters to the Vila Real Legal Medical Office.
The second victim, a 24-year-old, was “promptly assisted and stabilized by the National Institute of Medical Emergency (INEM) team” and later taken to a hospital.
On site, besides the VMER, were the Local Command of the Douro Maritime Police, the National Institute of Medical Emergency (INEM), the Resende Volunteer Firefighters, and the National Republican Guard.
The Maritime Police Psychology Office has been activated and is providing support to the victim’s family, while the Local Command of the Douro Maritime Police is handling the incident.
