Brussels announces 5 million to finance projects against disinformation.

The European Commission has announced a financial package targeting digital misinformation and independent journalism. The initiative allocates 3.15 million euros to projects aimed at detecting “malicious information manipulation campaigns” and analyzing the impact of digital misinformation on citizens across the EU’s 27 member states.

The Commission also seeks proposals to address this issue and enhance “social resilience.”

Within the five-million-euro package, 1.6 million euros are earmarked to fund projects designed to expand the “reach of content produced by independent fact-checking organizations” across the EU, with an emphasis on “creative solutions.”

The submission deadline for applications is June 16, and participants from civil society, universities, and research centers are eligible to apply.

The selected projects will collaborate with the European Digital Media Observatory (EDMO), which has been actively engaged in monitoring and combating misinformation.

Simultaneously, the European Commission unveiled a 13.5-million-euro program to support independent journalism within the EU to focus on issues related to the European Union.

The initiative aims not only to increase journalistic output in this area but also to ensure coverage in as many languages as possible from the member states.

Of the total funds for this initiative, 7.5 million euros will be allocated to support audiovisual media addressing European issues, and three million euros will be dedicated to proposals aiming to improve media pluralism in certain countries within the bloc.
