The initiative invites citizens, industry professionals, and experts to contribute their insights on the rules regarding airport charges, slot allocation, and ground handling services at EU airports.
The Commission states that the objective is to evaluate whether the current legislation—specifically the Slots Regulation, the Ground Handling Directive, and the Airport Charges Directive—remains effective given new market conditions and environmental priorities.
These rules directly affect the fees airlines pay for using airport infrastructure, which are reflected in the final ticket prices for passengers.
They also influence the availability of flight connections, waiting times, and service quality, such as baggage handling.
The consultation will take into account recent trends, including market consolidation, airport capacity challenges, labor shortages, increased competition from non-European airlines and airports, and the need for sector decarbonization.
The contributions collected will also help identify opportunities for simplifying rules and reducing administrative burdens.
The public consultation will be open until October 28 at the address https://ec.europa.eu/info/law/better-regulation/have-your-say/initiatives/14193-Aviation-fitness-check-of-EU-airport-legislation_en.
