The European Commission has proposed extending toll and usage fee exemptions for zero-emission heavy vehicles from December 31, 2025, to June 30, 2031. This initiative aims to encourage companies to invest in zero-emission trucks and buses for their fleets.
The Commission emphasizes that the initial cost of these vehicles is higher than their conventional counterparts, making them less attractive to buyers.
Through these exemptions, the EU aims to make zero-emission trucks and buses a more viable option for businesses.
The newly proposed exemption period will align with the EU’s carbon dioxide emission performance standards for new heavy vehicles, targeting a 43% reduction by 2030.
The initial exemption policy, outlined in Directive 1999/62/EC, allowed Member States to reduce or exempt usage fees and tolls for zero-emission vehicles in any vehicle group from March 24, 2022, until December 31, 2025.
The usage fee is designed to cover the costs associated with the construction, maintenance, operation, and development of infrastructure incurred by a Member State.
