Two hours. That was the duration of the initial video call exchange between European Trade Commissioner Maros Sefcovic and his American counterpart, Howard Lutnick, following the turmoil caused by U.S. President Donald Trump’s announcement of a 20% “reciprocal tariff” on the European Union (EU).
In this first contact, the Slovak commissioner emphasized that the tariffs are harmful and expressed willingness for negotiation.
“The trade relationship needs a new approach. The U.S. tariffs are damaging and unjustified,” Maros Sefcovic stated on X (formerly Twitter), disclosing some of the arguments he presented.
Despite no significant developments, the EU intends to continue negotiations with the Trump administration, with Maros Sefcovic assuring on the same social platform that they will “stay in touch.”
A frank 2h exchange w Sec. @howardlutnick and Amb. @jamiesongreer. I was clear: US tariffs are damaging, unjustified.
The 🇪🇺🇺🇸 trade relationship needs a fresh approach. The EU’s committed to meaningful negotiations but also prepared to defend our interests.

If the initial negotiations do not lead to progress, the EU’s second option is retaliation.
“The EU is committed to meaningful negotiations but is also ready to defend its interests,” concluded the European Trade Commissioner.
U.S. President Donald Trump announced on Wednesday new American tariffs of 20% on EU-imported products, adding to the 25% tariffs already imposed on the automotive, steel, and aluminum sectors.
Trump’s new tariffs are an attempt to boost U.S. industry while penalizing countries for what he described as years of unfair trade practices.
