The PAN has issued a statement noting it became aware of an incident through numerous public complaints, prompting a report to the Regional Animal Ombudsperson and GNR/SEPNA.
PAN/Açores further demanded clarification from the Angra do Heroísmo City Council, the Regional Government, and the PSP, as they are responsible for licensing and overseeing bullfighting activities.
The party calls for rejection of licensing applications for activities whenever safety regulations for people and animals are not adhered to.
According to PAN/Açores, there has been an increase in the severity of injuries to both people and animals, some resulting in deaths, during bullfights, which are described as undeniably violent events.
The party also requests data on the number of people admitted to health units and hospitals in the region due to injuries sustained from participating in such events, and inquiries whether civil liability insurance is being used to cover the expenses.
Referring to the incident in Porto Judeu, PAN/Açores questions whether the PSP officers on site filed a report ensuring the legal proceedings are followed.
When contacted, Guido Teles, Vice-President of the Angra do Heroísmo City Council, mentioned he lacked detailed information about the incident but noted that it is customary to have an inspector present at each bullfight, events that require municipal authorization.
“Whenever an accident occurs that results in legal violations, a report is filed and sent to us, which may lead to fines if the necessary conditions are met. As of now, we have not received any report regarding the mentioned bullfight,” stated the official.
