The government is seeking to offer workers more flexibility regarding their vacation days by allowing the purchase of additional leave. This initiative is outlined in the Government Program submitted to the Assembly of the Republic on Saturday.
In the document, the administration proposes “greater flexibility in taking vacations at the worker’s initiative, with the possibility of purchasing vacation days, with a limit to be contractually defined between the parties.”
This initiative is part of a “review of labor legislation, ideally within the context of Social Concertation, clarifying, debureaucratizing, and simplifying the legal regimes.”
The government emphasizes that “for an open economy like Portugal’s, it is crucial that labor legislation allows companies to respond quickly to market changes and alterations in their business model.”
“Therefore, the degree of rigidity of labor legislation should be reduced to promote the competitiveness and sustainability of the Portuguese economy and not constitute a barrier to attracting foreign direct investment,” the document states.
However, the “labor legislation should seek to address the challenges faced by workers and their families, promoting stable labor relations and better reconciliation of personal, family, and professional life.”
