BY THE MINUTE: Marcelo makes an appeal; Insurers want to “reach” those in need

The death toll from the tragic Elevador da Glória accident has risen to 17, confirmed Margarida Castro Martins, Director of the Lisbon Municipal Civil Protection Service, in an update provided at 9:15 AM on Wednesday from the accident site. Currently, 21 injuries have been reported.

According to the official, following the accident, 19 injured individuals were taken to the hospital, seven of whom were seriously injured (with two subsequently succumbing to their injuries in the hospital) and 12 sustaining minor injuries.

Eight were transported to Santa Maria Hospital, five to São José Hospital, three to São Francisco Xavier Hospital, one to Cascais Hospital, and two to Amadora-Sintra Hospital. The injured included 12 women and seven men, aged between 24 and 65. Among them was a 3-year-old child, whose health status is yet to be determined.

The injured comprise four Portuguese, two Germans, two Spaniards, one Korean, one Cape Verdean, one Canadian, one Italian, one French, one Swiss, and one Moroccan. The nationality of four of the hospitalized victims remains unidentified.

The nationalities of the deceased have not been disclosed, with that information being the responsibility of the Public Prosecutor’s Office (MP).

During the night, an additional “four minor injuries” were recorded from individuals who went independently to São José Hospital.
