The ‘Performances with Flavor’ project offers a journey through the places where Luis Vaz de Camões traveled – Ceuta, India, Mozambique Island, Macau, and Portugal – with each performance paired with a dinner-style snack representative of the local cuisine, as explained by the cultural association Espaço das Aguncheiras, the event’s organizer, in a statement.
The performances recount the experiences the poet had or is imagined to have had during each of these journeys, taking place at Espaço das Aguncheiras, in Sesimbra.
“These gatherings entail sharing auditory and gastronomic delights, perspectives on Camões’s poetry, his ‘globetrotter’ genius, and the quest to understand his struggles, contemporaries, and the discoveries and developments precipitated by the Age of Discoveries,” the organizers describe.
The inaugural performance, which takes place today, is dedicated to Ceuta (Morocco) and evokes Luis de Camões’s military experience in the Moroccan square, where he lost an eye.
The show is directed and dramaturged by São José Lapa and Inês Lapa Lopes, with a script by João Paiva, performance by Guilherme Macedo, and music by Rui Rebelo.
Subsequent performances will be held throughout the fall, with the second performance, dedicated to India, scheduled for October 25.
Produced by Joana Botelho, the series also includes scenography by Inês Lapa Lopes, sound research by Alberto Lopes and São José Lapa, with gastronomy by chef Naima.
