Campaign to help people in need buy medicines starts today

The nationwide campaign will involve approximately 600 pharmacies, encouraging the public to donate their change to the Abem Program, which provides assistance for economically vulnerable individuals and families to purchase necessary medication, as stated by the Abem: Network of Solidarity Medication Program, coordinated by the Dignitude Association.

Maria João Toscano, the executive director of the Dignitude Association, noted that about one in ten Portuguese citizens cannot afford prescribed medication due to financial constraints. She emphasized that the 14th “Donate Change to Those in Need” campaign, running until December 26, aims to reduce the number of individuals unable to buy medicine for financial reasons.

Among those in need, 64% are aged between 18 and 64, 24% are over 65, and 12% are children, Toscano specified.

She further explained that some individuals are faced with choosing between “providing meals for their children and family or buying medication.”

To illustrate the Abem Program’s impact, the director shared a testimony with Lusa from a recipient who had to choose between paying rent and purchasing needed medication.

“The program has been very important in my life, providing significant help. I have substantial medical expenses due to numerous health issues, including hypertension, diabetes, and depression. I couldn’t afford all my expenses before. To pay rent, I had to forgo buying medication. I am very grateful for the support; it has greatly helped my son and me,” the beneficiary, who requested anonymity, stated.

Toscano highlighted that even a few cents could make a significant difference in people’s lives, particularly those with chronic illnesses who may see their health deteriorate without medication.

Beneficiaries of the Abem: Network of Solidarity Medication Program are identified by Social Solidarity Private Institutions (IPSS), the Santa Casa da Misericórdia, and other charitable organizations.

The beneficiaries receive a card, to be presented at participating pharmacies to acquire prescribed medication.

Families in need can be identified for the card through local entities, ranging from Parish Councils and City Halls to IPSS and other social institutions.

Held twice a year, the initiative raised 13,102 euros across more than 500 participating pharmacies from May 26 to June 6, 2025, assisting 79 people.

The May 2024 edition collected 14,837 euros, helping 90 individuals, while the December 2024 campaign raised 24,101 euros, aiding 146 people.

Donations to the Abem Program can also be made year-round through the Dignitude Association’s website by mbway or bank transfer.
