Candidate Adelaide Ferreira wants to be the “voice of the people” in Lisbon

“The outcome of the campaign was great, I loved participating in this campaign. I think we conveyed the message that we are a party quite open to the truth of others. I think this is essential in today’s times, and, therefore, we stand for freedom, for the ability to listen to others, it is very important,” she highlighted.

Speaking to Lusa agency near the Campo Grande metro station, a location chosen by the ADN for their final official campaign action for Sunday’s municipal elections, Adelaide Ferreira stated she had accepted the candidacy for the Lisbon City Council to be “the voice of the people.”

During the campaign, the candidate, accompanied by party leader Bruno Fialho, discovered that the major issue with the executive of the Portuguese capital’s council is the elected officials themselves.

“We have to be for, not against. And when parties enter a dichotomy of ‘you are bad, I am good’, that is not good, it is terrible for Lisbon residents. […] The current president [Carlos Moedas] legitimated himself by complaining that he was not allowed to govern. Others say yes, but he is the one who… It’s like children,” she criticized.

For the ADN candidate, the elected officials for the Lisbon City Council should not view their mission as a global political one.

“They are there somewhat to serve their own agenda and, with that, they forget about us. […] Therefore, if I possibly go there, my God, how I will fight for this. We have to serve Lisbon residents,” she stated.

“There are no adults in the room, and this is what bothers me. I think I came to make this difference, because I am a singer, I have another sensitivity, and because I perceive that much more unites us than separates us,” she added.

“If we continue to antagonize each other, the rest of the life of Lisbon residents will have more potholes, more garbage, more of this and that. Put other new people there, who will make a difference, who will call them to reason. I will have this narrative with them, if I go there,” she promised.

When asked about her expectations for Sunday’s elections, Adelaide Ferreira replied: “I am already elected because I am here, I was elected by the ADN.”

Besides the ADN candidate, contenders for the Lisbon City Council in Sunday’s municipal elections include the current president Carlos Moedas (PSD/CDS-PP/IL), Alexandra Leitão (PS/Livre/BE/PAN), João Ferreira (CDU – PCP/PEV coalition), Bruno Mascarenhas (Chega), Ossanda Líber (New Right), José Almeida (Volt), Tomaz Ponce Dentinho (PPM/PTP), and Luís Mendes (RIR).

Currently, the municipal executive consists of seven elected from the “New Times” coalition – PSD/CDS-PP/MPT/PPM/Alliance, seven from the “More Lisbon” coalition – PS/Livre, two from CDU, and one from BE.
