“With these detailed plans, the intention is to enable municipalities to establish the foundations for more organized, inclusive, and resilient urban development, ensuring better quality of life and promoting efficient use of land and resources,” stated the National Institute of Territory Management (INGT) in a statement.
The planning work is already underway, with an initiative budgeted at around 1.6 million dollars (1.38 million euros), “with a loan from the World Bank and framed within the scope of the National Housing Plan,” it was reported.
The INGT emphasized that a prerequisite for the housing program’s success is urban planning by the municipalities.
“Everyone’s participation in this process is essential for the plans to reflect the needs and proposals of the communities,” the institute mentioned, calling for the active involvement of businesses and municipal entities.
On Thursday, torrential rains struck Santiago Island, resulting in one death and several damages.
In August, a storm hit São Vicente Island, causing nine deaths and widespread destruction.
The regional director of UN-Habitat for Africa advocated for the revision of urban planning in response to climate change during a visit to Cape Verde in September.
“We must rethink the structure and urban planning to ensure that everything we do complies with protection and climate change anticipation standards,” Oumar Sylla declared, reaffirming support for the country.
The government has presented development partners with a reconstruction plan for the affected areas to be prepared to face rain, which is rare in the archipelago but can be destructive.
