Capicua releases the album ‘An Ice Cream Before the End of the World’ this week.

“‘Um gelado antes do fim do mundo’ is an album about our time. It addresses the survival of poetry in a collapsing world, our lack of future and hope, but above all, the enchantment found in art and nature as an antidote to all this,” reads the album’s presentation text, which is the fifth original work by the rapper.

Consisting of 12 songs and five poems, ‘Um gelado antes do fim do mundo’ will be released on Friday and is being presented live in Lisbon today at Teatro Tivoli. The presentation in Porto, Capicua’s hometown, is scheduled for March 27 at Casa da Música.

In Capicua’s new album, “amid more emotional themes, there is ample space for social, political, and ecological issues, mixing lyrical and musical styles.”

The songs were crafted “through experimentation and the blending of compositional techniques with analog instruments and electronic music tools, always grounded in the word (spoken, hummed, and delivered in rap).”

Produced by Luís Montenegro, the album features various beatmakers, such as Keso, Virtus, DJ Ride, and Stereossauro, and vocalists, including Gisela João, Toty Sa’med, and Sopa da Pedra.

In ‘Estrela da Tarde,’ a revisitation of the theme written by José Carlos Ary dos Santos and Fernando Tordo, Carlos Carmo’s voice can also be heard, as he performed it in 1976 at the Festival da Canção.

Actor Pepê Rapazote lends his voice to ‘Flamingo,’ while Paulo Flores appears in ‘Morbidez’ to perform ‘É doce no morrer no mar,’ a song by Dorival Caymmi and Jorge Amado, reinterpreted over the years by several singers, including Cesária Évora.

‘Um gelado antes do fim do mundo’ follows ‘Madrepérola,’ released in January 2020, with which Capicua won the José Afonso Award in 2021, ‘Medusa’ (2015), ‘Sereia Louca’ (2014), and ‘Capicua’ (2012).

In addition to her solo career, Capicua is involved in the Mão Verde project, which is dedicated to children’s poetry, music, and illustration, and has produced two book discs.

Musicians Pedro Geraldes, Francisca Cortesão, and António Serginho are also part of the project.
