Captaincy of Funchal issues bad weather warning and extends the maritime agitation warning

The warnings are based on information from the Portuguese Institute of the Sea and Atmosphere (IPMA), with forecasts indicating wind gusts between 51 and 62 kilometers per hour from any direction.

The sea state expectations include waves reaching up to 4.5 meters on the northern coast of the island of Madeira and 2.5 meters on the southern coast.

The strong maritime agitation warning was initially set until 6:00 PM today but has been extended until 6:00 AM on Tuesday.

The Funchal Port Authority advises boat owners and operators to take precautions to ensure their safety, and warns the public of the danger posed by movement on harbor protective piers, cliffs, beaches, or natural pools. It also highlights the safety conditions required for recreational fishing, particularly near cliffs and rocky areas.

Additionally, the Regional Civil Protection Service notes that the southern coast of Madeira and mountainous regions will be under a yellow alert for rain between 6:00 AM and 12:00 PM on Tuesday.

In IPMA terminology, a yellow alert is the least severe on a scale of three, indicating a “risk situation for certain activities dependent on the meteorological situation.”
