In the maritime and non-maritime waters of the Sado River, including the respective beds and banks within the public water domain under the jurisdiction of the Port Captaincy of Setúbal, the capture, possession on board, landing, transportation, detention, and commercialization of Japanese clams are prohibited, as stated in a DGRM decree.
This decision considers the current status of the resource, which is scarce, as well as the age structure of Japanese clams in the Sado estuary.
The harvesting of Japanese clams in Portuguese estuaries has been permitted under specific licensing and regulations.
According to European legislation, the minimum conservation reference size has been set at 3.2 centimeters.
The capture of Japanese clams in the Sado was already prohibited at the beginning of August.
The DGRM is a central service of the direct state administration, with administrative autonomy, aimed at developing maritime safety and services, implementing fisheries policies, and preserving resources.
