A 23-year-old driver sustained serious injuries after crashing near Oeiras Parque on Saturday morning. He was rescued by officers from the Public Security Police (PSP) moments before the vehicle was engulfed in flames.
A citizen alerted authorities at 06:15 AM, reporting a crashed vehicle on Avenida Conselho da Europa, near the Oeiras Parque Shopping Center.
PSP officers arrived “within moments,” discovering the vehicle “already in flames with the driver still inside.” The Lisbon Metropolitan Command stated that the “quick and decisive intervention of its officers” from the Oeiras Police Division “saved the man’s life.”
The PSP officers acted immediately, “without hesitation,” to safely remove the driver using fire extinguishers to tackle the blaze.
The Oeiras Volunteer Firefighters were also on the scene. They extracted the victim just before the flames fully consumed the vehicle. The driver was treated by Paço de Arcos Volunteer Firefighters and transported to São José Hospital with severe lower limb injuries but is out of danger.
The Lisbon Metropolitan PSP Command thanked “the citizen who raised the alarm, underscoring the importance of collaboration between the community and security forces.” “The joint efforts of the PSP and the involved Firefighter corporations are also commendable,” the statement concluded.
