A fire in the parish of Caranguejeira is mobilizing more than 240 operatives this afternoon, and there are no homes at risk, Leiria’s Civil Protection councillor told Lusa.

Luís Lopes explained that there was a first fire in Casal Vermelho, in the parish of Caranguejeira, in the municipality of Leiria, in the early afternoon, which resulted from a rekindling of the fire that broke out on August 16.

The firefighters managed to resolve the situation and shortly afterwards a new fire broke out.

“We’re still trying to figure out if it’s a flare-up or not,” said the councillor in charge of Civil Protection at Leiria City Council.

Luís Lopes said that the fight was progressing well, believing that the situation could be resolved “in the next few hours”, not least because more resources are being deployed.

“It’s a forest area, and there are no houses at risk, or nearby,” he said.

According to the website of the National Emergency and Civil Protection Authority, at 18:10 there were 248 operatives on the scene, supported by 64 vehicles and nine aircraft.
