Carina Quaresma will chair the Commission for Gender Equality

“The Minister of Culture, Youth, and Sports has appointed Carina Quaresma as the interim president of CIG. Quaresma holds a PhD in Law and Security and a master’s in Public Management and Policies,” announced the office of Margarida Balseiro Lopes in a statement.

According to the ministry, the new president, who will take office on Thursday, has been involved in various fields related to human rights, population groups, and “especially vulnerable victims, particularly domestic violence, human trafficking, gender equality, racial discrimination, and children’s rights.”

“This leadership change aims to ensure that the CIG takes on a coordinating role in policies for the prevention and fight against domestic violence. This is the Government’s main priority in the field of Equality,” emphasized the statement.

The vice-president, Manuel Albano, will remain in his position, the ministry noted, adding that Margarida Balseiro Lopes expresses gratitude for the work done by the outgoing president Sandra Ribeiro.
