Carmo Barracks celebrates 114 years and is open to the public until May 10.

Situated in Largo do Carmo, Lisbon, the Carmo Barracks has opened its doors to the public in celebration of its 114th anniversary. The site will remain accessible to visitors from April 22 until May 10, offering a unique opportunity to explore several key sites in the history of Portugal.

The National Republican Guard (GNR) has announced that entry is “free,” encouraging “all citizens to visit the iconic Carmo Barracks, from Monday to Saturday, including holidays.”

Visitors will enter through the museum and follow “a route through various iconic spaces,” including the Salão Nobre (Affonso Botelho Room), the Command Offices (Surrender Room) where the famous encounter between Salgueiro Maia and Marcello Caetano took place, the Nun’Álvares Pereira Corridor, and the panoramic balcony overlooking Rossio.

According to the GNR, the museum is open from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., while the other areas are accessible from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.

On weekdays, access to the panoramic balcony overlooking Rossio is limited between 4 p.m. and 5 p.m.
