Carneiro accuses the government of boasting about work done by the PS in housing.

José Luís Carneiro attended the presentation of Miguel Paulo’s candidacy for the Rio Maior City Council in the Santarém district this afternoon, during which he revisited the topic of housing, one of the commitments of the PS candidates for the municipal elections on October 12.

“The Government, which boasts about the 10,000 houses it has delivered so far, is boasting about the work performed and developed by the Socialist Party governments, because, until today, they have not placed a single house on the housing market,” he accused.

According to the socialist leader, it was the PS in the Government that negotiated the Recovery and Resilience Plan in Brussels and also conducted negotiations with municipalities across the country for local housing strategies, which enable the provision of 26,000 houses.

“I know on social media, many often ask us: but what did you do in eight years? In housing and so many other areas? I ask, with respect and responsibility, to answer that it was us,” he appealed.

Carneiro emphasized that it was the PS that negotiated “an important financial investment package to enable the planning of the first national housing strategy” and secured “a part of the financing for those local housing strategies.”

“It is now necessary for the Government to fulfill what was planned, with guarantees of funding, and it is necessary for the Government to do its part, which is to plan for further investment in our country’s housing needs,” he urged.

The Government’s new housing measures were once again not omitted from the discourse.

“When the Prime Minister of our country considers rents of 2,300 euros as moderate rent, on one side, it shows a lack of understanding of the living conditions of the Portuguese middle classes,” he accused.

According to the PS leader, this measure will “contribute to housing prices rising even more than they already have.”

“We will have young people who will no longer be able to stay in the homes where they currently are because rents will rise again, as this is not a response to the needs of families and young people in our country,” he warned.
