In light of forecasts predicting very high temperatures and strong winds for the coming week, José Luís Carneiro offered three suggestions to the Government regarding the fire risk.
Speaking to journalists on the sidelines of António Domingues’ re-election campaign presentation for the Ansião City Council, Leiria district, the socialist leader argued that the Government should “ensure the reinforcement of monitoring and prevention.”
The former Minister of Internal Administration indicated that this reinforcement should be secured “through the mobilization of the National Republican Guard patrols and also the reinforcement of the Armed Forces patrols,” also mobilizing the P-3, an aerial means that allows for coordinating aerial supervision with ground operations.
Furthermore, José Luís Carneiro suggested that the Government should engage with the European Civil Protection Mechanism to pre-position aerial resources.
In his view, this dialogue with the European Mechanism should not be seen by the Government as “a sign of weakness,” but rather as the utilization of “common resources that exist precisely to reinforce national means when we need them.”
Lastly, the PS Secretary-General also suggested “activating more teams from the humanitarian associations of firefighters, in coordination with the League of Portuguese Firefighters.”
“I am well aware of the difficulties the country is facing, particularly with the weather forecasts for next week,” he said, highlighting that he makes these suggestions based on his experience leading the Ministry of Internal Administration.
