Carneiro distances himself from politicians who give in to the “spectacle-politics.”

“In the times we live, many politicians are tempted to succumb to spectacle politics, the dizziness of the moment, seeking individual stardom, imposing a cost on our societies. They make hasty decisions, exploit fears and apprehensions, and inflame emotions,” criticized José Luís Carneiro in his first statement as the leader of the PS following the direct elections over the past two days.

José Luís Carneiro stated that “these politicians may have an easy media life,” but they lead societies “towards backwardness” and “undermine social cohesion.”

“Some, like the populists, do so in an ostentatious manner, preaching resentment, stirring up hatred, and mobilizing pockets of real and fictional discontent. Others, like conservatives and neoliberals, do so more discreetly,” he pointed out.

The new leader of the PS promised a “different stance.”

“I seek to be a considered person. I am well aware that, even in politics, a life or an option that is not reflected upon is neither a life nor a lived option. I strive to have a sense of responsibility,” he committed.

Carneiro wants to rebuild the PS and aims to “take solid steps.”

“Knowing what we want and where we are going. Without haste. Without tactical temptations. Without focusing excessively on conjunctural issues,” he emphasized.

According to the socialist, his “diversified experience” in life has made him “an understanding and determined person, firm, serene, and calm,” pledging to honor the responsibilities he has assumed.
