José Luís Carneiro visited the Portuguese Association for Victim Support (APAV) this morning, expressing regret over the 24 women murdered in Portugal this year, which he described as a “social scourge” necessitating awareness and action from everyone. He highlighted an “insensitivity” on the political agenda of the Government.
“When we left the Ministry of Internal Administration, the regulation on the database regarding the registration of reports, trials in courts, and monitoring of aggressors had been completed and sent for the opinion of the National Data Protection Commission,” he stated.
The leader of the PS, who previously served as Minister of Internal Administration, questioned the current Government on “the status of the regulation concerning the database against domestic violence.”
“And also, where is the platform operationally that ensures interconnection between the Ministry of Justice and the Ministry of Internal Administration, which allows greater efficiency in combating this social scourge?” he further inquired.
Carneiro warned of “imminent dangers,” starting with “discourses that promote aggressiveness and violence, followed by the digital platforms themselves.”
“It is also time to ask the Government what steps are being taken to follow European recommendations, being applied in other countries, notably for removing content that encourages this aggressiveness and violence, particularly in dating violence, as well as other forms such as sexual violence, violence against the elderly, violence against children, and violence in schools,” he questioned further.
When asked if this is an area where he feels the Government has failed, the PS leader pointed to a “lack of awareness of the types of violence.”
“We do not see repudiation of acts that have become public, such as those committed against immigrants, starting with those who have the duty to enforce the law. Therefore, witnessing the Government remain silent on issues of this nature clearly shows the insensitivity on the Government’s political agenda,” he condemned.
