Carneiro spoke with Centeno and PS will receive him “with open arms”

In Vila Nova de Famalicão, Braga district, during the presentation of local electoral lists, PS leader José Luís Carneiro was questioned by journalists regarding the future role or position for the outgoing governor of the Bank of Portugal.

“I have ideas. I must say that I have already spoken with Mário Centeno. He now has two months of responsibility; when those two months of responsibility at the Bank of Portugal come to an end, naturally we will welcome Mário Centeno with open arms,” responded José Luís Carneiro.

Centeno vai manter-se em funções no BdP até à entrada de Santos Pereira

The Bank of Portugal (BdP) confirms that the current governor, Mário Centeno, will remain at the helm until Álvaro Santos Pereira, the individual named by the Government today to succeed him, takes over.

The PS secretary-general was also asked about the upcoming State Budget, reiterating that no preliminary agreements would be made without first knowing the Government’s proposal.

“We can only speak about what we know. Today no one knows what does not exist. There isn’t a budget yet; we will wait for the proposal that the Government will present to the Assembly of the Republic. I believe it will be delivered on October 10, the last day of the local election campaign. Let us await the proposal that the Government will bring to serve our country and not specifically to serve the local elections,” declared José Luís Carneiro.

However, the PS secretary-general outlined the priority areas for the party, acknowledging concerns that are “the concerns of the Portuguese people.”

“The first concern is with incomes and salaries. This is one of the most important concerns for young people and the middle classes. We need to advance our economy to reach the European average salary levels as quickly as possible. Secondly, the issue of housing. On Monday morning, I will have solutions for emergency housing, but also more structural solutions for housing,” noted Carneiro.

Another sector the PS is concerned about is health and the National Health Service (SNS).

“It is not understandable that as we reach the peak of summer, the Government does not have a properly structured coordination of hospital emergencies to provide predictability and security to our citizens, particularly in Greater Lisbon and also in the Setúbal Peninsula,” accused the PS leader.
