“We have already alerted the Government to the necessity of addressing international warnings, as having healthy public accounts is essential for attracting foreign direct investment,” stated José Luís Carneiro.
The socialist emphasized that foreign direct investment contributes to financing and capitalizing national companies and the country’s economy, noting that this capitalization enables the creation of wealth, employment, higher incomes, and improved living conditions.
The sole candidate for the position of secretary-general of the PS spoke to journalists at the sidelines of a session with around 150 militants in Aveiro, where he presented the main guidelines of his candidacy’s motion.
Having just arrived from São Brás de Alportel, where he participated in the PS’s municipal election campaign presentation in that Algarve municipality, Carneiro noted that he has been warmly received, pointing out that a movement is emerging from the grassroots into civil society.
“What touches me is that many people from civil society are showing up. Yesterday [Saturday] at the campaign presentation, we had people from the economy, businesses, culture, innovation, and creativity, who came to us expressing their desire to support and help me to revive the Socialist Party, and that is my primary mission,” he stated.
José Luís Carneiro remarked that if no other list emerges by the 12th, when the candidacy presentation deadline expires, it would indicate a convergence towards unity, aiming to strengthen the capacity to respond and dialogue with civil society.
“The quicker we reconstitute ourselves as a leading opposition force, the sooner we can also assert this alternative to Portuguese society,” he added.
The candidate further mentioned that in the coming times, he will continue listening to militants and civil society to refine the motion he aims to present at the future Congress.
Regarding the PS’s decision on whom to support in the presidential elections, Carneiro mentioned that the priority at the moment is the municipal elections, adding that at the appropriate time, PS bodies will democratically decide on the presidential elections.
This marks the second time within a year and a half that José Luís Carneiro is running for the leadership of the PS, following his internal election loss to Pedro Nuno Santos in 2023.
