Carolina Pia announces candidacy for the leadership of PAN against Sousa Real

A statement announced the intention to present a candidacy for the National Political Commission (CPN) at the X Congress of PAN, scheduled for December 20, led by former leader Carolina Pia. This initiative is aimed at restoring the party’s identity and returning to its foundational pillars: People, Animals, and Nature.

“We aim to rebuild the party with seriousness, responsibility, and vision, offering a robust economic program capable of restoring credibility and public utility to PAN,” stated the candidate list.

The candidacy stresses the need for a “fair Congress,” refusing to partake in a process that merely confirms the current leadership, where rules, deadlines, and administrative decisions hinder alternative lists or district representation.

Without “real guarantees of internal democracy, transparency, and equal opportunities,” the candidacy will not legitimize a process that disregards affiliate members, threatening to leave the current leadership alone at the Congress unless changes occur.

Carolina Pia, heading this candidacy and previously the party’s top candidate in Viseu during the 2024 legislative elections, alongside leader Fernando Geração, filed an injunction against the Congress with the Constitutional Court, alleging inadequate representation for all members in the leadership election.

This group of members justifies the filing of injunctions as actions taken to defend the democratic rights of affiliates and the necessity for a genuinely plural, inclusive, and participatory Congress.

The list also mentions that the public presentation of programmatic lines and candidacy elements will occur once genuine democratic contest conditions at the Congress are confirmed, expressing willingness to contribute to a solution that unites rather than divides the party.

The X National Congress of PAN will take place on December 20 in Coimbra, defining the “strategic lines of the next political cycle” of the party and electing its leadership.

The spokesperson and sole PAN deputy, Inês de Sousa Real, will seek reelection at the X National Congress, promising an internal dynamics restructuring, according to an official source from her candidacy on November 12.
