
“Following the accident this afternoon involving the Glória funicular, Carris regrets the occurrence of victims and is monitoring the situation,” announced the company managing the Glória funicular in a statement.
Carris noted that “all maintenance protocols have been conducted and adhered to,” with the last inspection occurring in the previous year.
The company stated that the general maintenance, which takes place every four years, was conducted in 2022, while the last interim repair, done every two years, occurred in 2024.
“Monthly, weekly maintenance programs and daily inspections have been meticulously followed,” it stated.
The company also mentioned launching an immediate inquiry alongside authorities to determine the real causes of the accident.
The Glória funicular in Lisbon derailed this Wednesday at 18:04 on the Calçada da Glória.
According to INEM, the accident resulted in 15 fatalities and 18 injuries, including five in serious condition and 13 minor injuries.
The government declared a national day of mourning for Thursday.
The Glória funicular, managed by Carris, connects Restauradores to Jardim de São Pedro de Alcântara in Bairro Alto, spanning around 265 meters, and is highly popular with tourists.
