The public transport company Carris is launching an investigation into an alleged racist incident involving Diana, the daughter of Cascais City Councilwoman Carla Nunes Semedo.
The company released a statement indicating its immediate response after learning of a complaint about racist remarks supposedly made by an employee of Viação Alvorada, a service provider under a contract with Carris Metropolitana. These remarks were allegedly made last Friday at 10:30 PM. Transportes Metropolitanos de Lisboa (TML) has requested a thorough investigation to clarify the incident. The statement added that the operator has been urged to take necessary measures required by the situation.
Carris emphasized its strong opposition to any form of racial discrimination against passengers and reiterated its commitment to equality, respect, and inclusion.
The company explained that drivers servicing Carris Metropolitana are employed by the operators responsible for providing bus transportation services. Carris Metropolitana works in coordination with the operator when incidents involving their professionals occur, intervening when necessary with demands for appropriate measures in urgent situations.
Councilwoman Carla Nunes Semedo, who initially reported the incident on Instagram on Sunday, has informed the Lusa news agency of her intention to file a complaint for racism against the bus driver involved.
The incident involved a driver allegedly telling Semedo’s daughter that he “didn’t transport animals.”
Carla Nunes Semedo has already contacted Carris, which has promised to take action and provided a contact for her to send a written complaint, which she has not yet had the opportunity to submit.
