Carris workers accept salary changes and will negotiate schedule

The STRUP/Fectrans has been authorized to sign off on the salary adjustments proposed by the company following the workers’ struggle,” announced Manuel Leal, a national leader of the STRUP – Sindicato dos Trabalhadores de Transportes Rodoviários e Urbanos de Portugal.

Leal, representing the union within the Federation of Transport and Communications Unions (Fectrans), spoke following a plenary meeting of Carris workers at the Miraflores station (Oeiras, Lisbon district). The meeting aimed to assess the company’s response to the workers’ demands, with Carris stating that it had exhausted “its negotiating capacity regarding financial implications.”

The union associated with the CGTP-IN was also “authorized to continue negotiations in the coming weeks for scheduling the 35-hour workweek,” Manuel Leal added.

Should the negotiations not yield results in the coming weeks, the workers have further authorized STRUP/Fectrans to call a strike “in early June,” without specifying a date, to allow room for an agreement with the company.

Despite agreeing to the salary changes proposed by Carris, Manuel Leal emphasized that most workers found the proposals “insufficient.”

In a statement, the STRUP leadership explained that Carris’ administration presented “as final the proposal of 70 euros on the table, 12 euros in meal allowance, an increase in shift allowance – to 6% for two shifts and 9% for three shifts – with the changes to the RCP [professional careers regulations] coming into effect on 01/01/2026.”

While agreeing with “the increase in shift allowances and generally with the positive developments in the RCP,” Fectrans maintained “complete opposition to the remaining issues, as they fall short of the necessary real wage increase and value in the meal allowance.”

Since the board continues to delay the removal of “strike time consideration for vacation increase purposes, STRUP will immediately request the intervention of the ACT [Authority for Working Conditions] to restore legality,” the note stated.

The Companhia Carris de Ferro de Lisboa, founded in 1872, provides surface urban public transport service for passengers in the municipality of Lisbon and is managed by the city council of the capital.
