It arrived in the capital in December 2021, setting up shop on Rua Garrett. The new store is a four-minute walk away.
“Iwant a pastel de nata and a coffee.” The phrase most heard in Castro’s ateliers will echo in a new space. A year after its debut in Porto (where it opened at 61 Rua Mouzinho da Silveira in 2019), the brand headed to the capital to set up Chiado, more precisely at number 38 Rua Garrett.
On July 17, it decided to reinforce its presence in the same area of the city – the new store, next to the Santa Justa Elevator at 254 Rua Áurea, is about a four-minute walk away.
There you will find the famous homemade pastéis de nata that come out of the oven several times a day, produced according to the recipe created by pastry chef Daniel Seixas. The cream rests for 24 hours before being used – all to gain more flavor.
The store’s official name, Castro Áurea, underlines its privileged location and, as with the brand’s previous openings, features exquisite decoration. Part of a Pombaline architecture building, the window displays a typical mid-20th century design, with golden elements.
Another highlight of this new space was the discovery of a mural (dated 1935) by Maria Keil, a famous Portuguese painter and illustrator. The work of art was, curiously, hidden under a decoration of mirrors dating from the 70s.
The space is open between 8 am and 10 pm. Each pastry costs €1.5. A box of two costs €3, and a box of six costs €9. To accompany, the best thing is to order a coffee.
