A 44-year-old man was arrested in the early hours of April 29 after being caught stealing food for “personal consumption” from a commercial establishment in the Lisbon parish of Penha de França.
The suspect was observed inside the store “placing food items in a shopping basket,” prompting intervention by police officers who were patrolling the area, per a statement from the Public Security Police (PSP).
Officers noted that “the entrance/exit door glass was completely shattered,” with this method utilized by the suspect to gain entry into the premises.
Upon questioning, the man “stated that he was stealing food for his own consumption, having already organized a cart with various food items totaling 121.96 euros.”
The individual further mentioned that he planned to leave the items “where he was staying,” with authorities discovering another shopping basket with products from the same establishment, valued at 152.09 euros.
The PSP determined that the man “was issued a voluntary departure notice on January 27 of this year, thus being in an irregular situation within the national territory.”
The man was taken to the detention cells of COMETLIS to be brought before the court.
This operation was conducted by the Lisbon Metropolitan Command of the PSP, through the 5th Police Division.
