“Cavaco Silva, 13 days before BES collapsed, said that everything was fine”

During the campaign rally for the legislative elections in Viseu, Pedro Nuno Santos was approached by journalists regarding an article by Cavaco Silva published today. In the piece, Silva argued that the Prime Minister was subjected to a “campaign of suspicion and insinuations” by the opposition and “some media outlets.”

“I remember Cavaco Silva, 13 days before BES fell, said everything was fine,” Santos replied while moving towards the amphitheater where the rally was taking place.

Regarding the Prime Minister’s accusations earlier this morning during a radio debate that Pedro Nuno Santos had undergone a “re-styling” for the campaign and was now appearing in the final week of debates, the PS leader responded, “I am genuine; I am what people see. Luís Montenegro is not.”

He continued, “[These accusations come] from a man who is not sincere in politics, is accustomed to lying and deceiving people, and thinks everyone is the same. I deceive no one, I am genuine, I am transparent,” he affirmed.

Former President of the Republic Aníbal Cavaco Silva argued today that the Prime Minister was targeted by a “campaign of suspicion and insinuations” from the opposition and “some media,” largely centered on the invasion of his private life.

In an opinion article published in the online newspaper Observador, Cavaco Silva reiterated his defense of the ethical and moral stance of the Prime Minister and President of PSD, Luís Montenegro, emphasizing his technical and political superiority over other party leaders. Silva drew a comparison between the no-confidence motion recently rejected by parliament and one he himself presented, which was approved in 1986.
