In the early hours of Wednesday, prison guards at Caxias Prison shot down a drone that was flying over the facility, according to Frederico Morais of the National Prison Guards Union.
The drone was carrying a package containing several mobile phones, SIM cards, a rope, and tobacco, which were subsequently seized.
The unmanned aerial vehicle was detected by prison guards using the facility’s video surveillance system. Upon being shot, the package it was carrying dropped near a cell, where guards conducted searches afterwards.
During these searches, guards discovered six mobile phones, chargers, and several SIM cards in the same cell.
The operator of the drone has not yet been identified.
“We lack the resources to ensure security in prisons, let alone identify who is operating a drone,” Frederico Morais added.
