CCB honors Peter Brook on Saturday with a lecture and film screening.

An event honoring the legacy of Peter Brook, a prominent figure in 20th-century theater and cinema, will commence at 17:00 at the Grande Auditório do CCB. The participation of his son and close collaborator is included, as noted by the CCB.

The event begins with a lecture by Simon Brook, moderated by expert and critic Tiago Bartolomeu Costa.

In the discussion, Simon Brook will share stories and insights on his father’s creative process, the significance of his artistic legacy, and the impact of this monumental work on the international theater and cinema context, the CCB highlights.

At 19:00, Peter Brook’s film “Mahabharata,” produced in 1989, will be screened.

Known for classic works on theater such as “The Empty Space,” Peter Brook devoted his life to the pursuit of a universal theatrical language rooted in the simplicity and truth of gesture.

“In ‘Mahabharata,’ this vision reaches its pinnacle, transforming the vast ancestral poem into a powerful and timeless work about war, duty, destiny, and humanity,” the CCB emphasizes.

With free entry upon prior ticket collection from the box office, the event celebrates theater, cinema, and the power of universal narratives.

Peter Brook was born in London on March 21, 1925, and died in Paris on July 2, 2022.

He developed an interest in theater while a university student, acknowledging influences from playwrights like Bertolt Brecht and Antonin Artaud.

Brook advocated for theater that emphasized the psychological characterization of characters to give “visibility” to the human soul.

In 1970, Peter Brook founded the International Centre for Theatre Research in Paris, marking a career characterized by staging plays in the West End and Broadway circuits.

As a director, playwright, opera creator, and director, Brook began his theater career with Shakespeare texts at the Royal Shakespeare Company, continuing with works by Jean Cocteau and Jean-Paul Sartre, among others, leading to his first films.

He received two Tony Awards for Best Direction in theater: in 1966 for the play “Marat/Sade” and in 1971 for “A Midsummer Night’s Dream.” In 1991, Brook was honored as a grand officer of the Order of Saint James of the Sword of Portugal.
