CCB Museum celebrates 2nd anniversary with exhibition “Avenida 211”

A new exhibition is set to open at 9:00 PM on Friday, dedicated to the iconic building on Avenida da Liberdade in Lisbon. This building was a hub of artistic activity in the heart of the capital between 2006 and 2014, as noted by the exhibition’s curators, the director of the Museum of Contemporary Art of the CCB (MAC/CCB), Nuria Enguita, and curator Marta Mestre.

More than forty artists and musicians from various generations established their workspaces in this location during that period, where engineer, visual artist, and facilitator António Bolota had his own studio.

Bolota also initiated and promoted several curatorial projects, as highlighted by the research of Giorgia Casara and Sara De Chiara for this exhibition, according to a text released by the museum.

“This context was crucial for the vitality of Lisbon’s artistic scene during a period that encompassed both the global financial crisis (2008-2009) and Portugal’s debt crisis and the intervention of the troika (2010-2014) — both turning points in the city’s pronounced financialization, as described by various social scientists,” states MAC/CCB regarding the exhibition, which will be on display until April 5, 2026.

Considered an “irreproducible” project in the heart of the Portuguese capital, it significantly altered the contemporary art landscape. It spanned four floors of a building that hosted dozens of artists, musicians, curatorial projects, and creators of different generations.

“Before becoming synonymous with luxury, the avenue witnessed the emergence of a space of resistance, dedicated to experimentation and interdisciplinarity, in a vibrant collaborative spirit, making artistic production accessible,” emphasizes the museum about the exhibition that will gather 60 of the names who passed through the building.

The exhibition — with architecture by André Maranha and design by Sofia Gonçalves — forms a “living archive” from the collection of testimonies and works of the participants, “not to crystallize the past but to continue to inspire and question the present.”

On Friday, following the exhibition’s inauguration, there will be a performance by the collective Osso Exótico and a DJ set curated by Filho Único.

On Saturday, the public is invited to participate in activities and guided tours of the exhibitions, as well as in the proposals Points of Encounters and Museum Builder of Mappings.

There will also be a workshop-visit titled “In search of lightness,” subject to prior registration.

The final day, Sunday, includes activities for families with children between two and four years old, sessions of Points of Encounters and Museum Builder of Mappings, and visits to the exhibitions.

The celebration program concludes with a visit to the World Experiences exhibition, led by Nuria Enguita, and a public reading of Raccord by Mattia Denisse, performed by Maria João Falcão.

The museum space, which houses the Berardo Collection, also includes works from the State’s Contemporary Art Collection (CACE), the Ellipse Collection acquired by the state, and the Teixeira de Freitas Collection, left in deposit by the collector.
