CDS is concerned but rejects that Iran has access to nuclear weapons.

The CDS-PP expressed “great concern” today over the escalating conflict in the Middle East, emphasizing the importance of preventing Iran’s “theocratic dictatorship” from gaining access to nuclear weapons.

In a post on the social network ‘X’, formerly known as Twitter, the centrists, led by Nuno Melo, the Minister of Defense, voiced “great concern” regarding the “escalation of the conflict situation in the Middle East.”

“For the CDS, it is crucial that Iran and its theocratic dictatorship do not have access to nuclear weapons, as it represents the main threat to the region,” the statement asserted.

The CDS calls for restraint and the establishment of a path towards “peace and tranquility,” which includes “respect for the integrity of the State of Israel and a fair solution for the Palestinians.”

Today, the President of the Republic, Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa, highlighted the severity of the situation in the Middle East, urging restraint and the “urgency of resuming the diplomatic pathway” as a means to resolve the conflict.

Prime Minister Luís Montenegro also expressed concern over the risk of a “serious escalation” in the Middle East and urged “maximum restraint from all parties” and a return to negotiations to find a “diplomatic solution.”

In a post on the social network ‘X’, formerly Twitter, the Portuguese head of government stated that “Iran’s nuclear program is a serious threat to world security and must not continue.”

The United States entered the conflict between Israel and Iran on Saturday by bombing the three main facilities involved in Iran’s nuclear program.

President Donald Trump threatened Tehran’s regime with further attacks if “peace does not come quickly.”

According to the Pentagon, strategic bombings targeted Fordo’s underground fortress, Iran’s main uranium enrichment plant, in an attack complemented by the launch of up to 30 Tomahawk missiles from submarines against two other facilities, Natanz and Isfahan.

The Iranian Ministry of Foreign Affairs today stated that the United States has launched a “dangerous war” against Iran.

Israel and Iran have been exchanging daily missile and drone attacks since the early morning of Friday, June 13, when Israel began bombing the Persian country.
