The centrist deputy stated that the recent elections have provided the Government with “greater sustainability,” allowing it to continue a significant process of tax relief and income restitution to the Portuguese people, during a conversation with the Lusa Agency as part of Thursday’s state of the nation debate.
João Almeida believes it is currently possible to “offer better conditions to people and resolve issues faced by various professions, especially in public administration, which have been persisting for many years” without disrupting a “trajectory of balance in public accounts.”
The centrist expressed hope that the upcoming State Budget will also create conditions for companies to enjoy further tax relief, enabling them to invest more and contribute to an improved quality of life in Portugal and retain young people within the country.
João Almeida also touched on immigration, praising the Government’s efforts and underscoring that the administration’s work aims to “provide assurance to those residing in the country and those who arrive legally and adhere to the rules.”
In response to the opposition’s criticism of the current health situation, the deputy sarcastically remarked that such critiques are “understandable when they come from the PS” because, he added, no one knows these problems better “than those who created them.”
“The Socialist Party, which left health and the National Health Service in the worst situation ever and also brought housing to its worst state, knows very well that these issues cannot be resolved within a year, so it is only natural for them to talk about it,” he noted.
Regarding the role of centrists in the coalition and the Government’s actions, João Almeida highlighted the executive’s measure to ban mobile phones in schools up to the sixth grade, assuring that the party is “content and motivated” by its role within the government.
Following parliamentary recess, CDS-PP will focus its efforts on discussing the State Budget for 2026, with an emphasis on tax reductions for both companies and individuals to increase disposable income, João Almeida disclosed.
“What we genuinely want is to contribute with measures to enhance the quality of life for the Portuguese. At the start of every legislative session, the budget period is crucial to return income and ensure more income remains with families, so that more people are employed and those who are employed earn even better,” he stated.
Scheduled for next Thursday is the debate on the state of the nation, the first since the XXV Constitutional Government took office, which will feature the presence of Prime Minister Luís Montenegro and the entire governmental team.
