CDS-PP says that the agreement with PSD guarantees a “stable government” in Madeira

“We informed the Representative of the Republic that the CDS has a governmental and parliamentary agreement with the winning party of the elections, the PSD, and in our view, this agreement ensures stability for four years, allowing a government with an absolute majority, an approved program, and budgets,” stated Ricardo Vieira, a Christian Democrat leader.

Ricardo Vieira served as the spokesperson for the CDS-PP delegation that was received today by the Representative of the Republic, in the absence of the party’s regional leader, José Manuel Rodrigues, who will join the new Madeiran government but is currently away on personal matters.

The leader emphasized that the agreement with the PSD is of a parliamentary nature, ensuring concerted positions in the Madeira Legislative Assembly, and of a governmental nature, meaning “there will be a government position under the responsibility of the CDS.”

“With this, we ensure the stability that, in our opinion, the people wanted the parties to guarantee following the elections,” he remarked.

The Representative of the Republic for the autonomous region received today in Funchal, at the Palácio de São Lourenço, his official residence, the PSD (which secured 23 deputies on Sunday), the JPP (11), the PS (eight), Chega (three), and the CDS-PP (one), with IL (one) scheduled for a meeting at 14:15.

On Tuesday, two days post-election, the regional structures of PSD and CDS-PP outlined a post-electoral agreement securing a parliamentary majority in the region, which includes integrating the leader of the archipelago’s Christian Democrats, José Manuel Rodrigues, into the executive.

These were the third regional legislative elections in Madeira within roughly a year and a half, featuring 14 electoral lists: CDU (PCP/PEV), PSD, Livre, JPP, Nova Direita, PAN, Força Madeira (PTP/MPT/RIR), PS, IL, PPM, BE, Chega, ADN, and CDS-PP.

The vote occurred 10 months after the previous one, following the approval of a motion of no confidence filed by Chega, citing judicial investigations involving Regional Government members, including Miguel Albuquerque, and the consequent dissolution of the Legislative Assembly by the President of the Republic.

In regional legislative elections, the Representative of the Republic invites a political force to form a government based on the results, after consulting the parliamentary parties.
