CDS repudiates “electoral exploitation” and expresses confidence in Moedas

CDS addresses the tragic accident involving Lisbon’s Glória funicular.

The CDS party has condemned any attempts to use a tragic accident for electoral gain, particularly accusations that have been refuted, such as claims of disinvestment in Carris, according to a statement from the party.

In a formal communication, the CDS-PP stated its refusal to engage in political speculation without the prior establishment of facts.

“The CDS supports all transparent and thorough investigations and expresses its confidence in the Lisbon City Council and its president, Carlos Moedas, for managing the crisis effectively and ensuring the faithful dissemination of factual information over demagoguery or falsehoods. The party pledges to cooperate with all inquiries to establish the truth,” the statement continues.

The centrist party also emphasized its solidarity with the victims and the city from the onset of the accident, suspending all its political and party activities and respecting the official mourning and the families’ right to respect.

Led by Nuno Melo, the party reiterated its profound sorrow for the tragic accident involving the Glória funicular and extended its appreciation to the emergency services involved in aiding the victims.

The Glória funicular in Lisbon derailed on Wednesday, resulting in 16 deaths and 23 injuries.

The Government declared a day of national mourning on Thursday, while the Lisbon City Council instituted three days of municipal mourning from Thursday to Saturday.

Managed by Carris, the Glória funicular connects the Restauradores with the São Pedro de Alcântara garden in the Bairro Alto, covering approximately 265 meters, and is a popular attraction for tourists.
