“We are so close to the coast, yet it feels like we’re thousands of kilometers away, with so many gaps in accessibility, healthcare access, and opportunities for young people to settle,” stated the candidate to the press.
Emphasizing his intention to “solve problems,” José Carneiro, 78, outlined his priorities to be road infrastructure, healthcare, environment, housing, and all issues related to the elderly.
Having spent 60 years involved in social movements, the candidate, who divides his time between his birthplace Góis and Loures, lamented that Góis residents are compelled to seek medical care first in Arganil and then in Coimbra.
“These are the reasons that lead me to run, as over the years, political decision-makers have not prioritized these issues, neglecting people’s needs,” he emphasized.
According to 2023 statistics, the municipality of Góis has 3,800 residents, spread across four parishes.
In the 2021 local elections, the PSD secured two councilors, leading the municipality for the second time (the first being in 1979), the Independent Citizens Group for Góis elected two, and the PS elected one.
Bank manager Jaime Garcia is the PS’s choice to reclaim the Góis Council, lost in the last local elections to the PSD, whose president Rui Sampaio has yet to announce his re-election bid.
This year’s local elections are expected to take place at the end of September or beginning of October.
