“From the very beginning, I have always felt a great welcome and generosity from the people. This great victory was not a surprise to those who were on the ground, and now, we will reciprocate with work,” said Álvaro Beijinha.
Álvaro Beijinha, who ran for the first time for the Sines Municipality seat in the Setúbal district, emphasized that, alongside the “internal restructuring of the municipality and public space,” the future executive will demand “more public investment” from the government in this area.
“Perhaps one of the most immediate measures is to request a meeting with the Prime Minister to discuss Sines, which deserves special attention from the government, [because it is] where the largest private and public investments are located, and even invite him to visit Sines to understand the critical need for public investment in the area,” he stated.
He added that the municipality, “no matter how much it wishes to do, lacks the financial resources” to address “fundamental issues such as housing problems.”
The independent candidate from the coalition of PCP and PEV, which did not secure an absolute majority, also promised to “work on planning” for the municipality and guaranteed “significant investment in the improvement of public spaces.”
In a statement, PS candidate Filipa Faria acknowledged the election loss and noted that voters penalized the current executive, led by Nuno Mascarenhas, who could not run again due to term limits, “for a part of the city that was neglected.”
Despite the “significant decrease” in votes for the PS, which became the third political force with representation in the municipal executive, Filipa Faria expressed acceptance “with humility of what the voting reflected” and assured that she “will continue to work towards improving future votes and conduct internal reflection on these results.”
In Sunday’s municipal elections, data from the Ministry of Internal Administration (MAI) showed that CDU obtained 40.72% of the votes, securing victory and three mandates.
This was followed by the independent movement MAIS, which received 23.37% of the votes and elected two councilors, the PS, with 16.61% and one mandate, and the PSD/CDS-PP coalition, with 12.14% and also one mandate.
Out of 12,021 registered voters in this municipality, 7,340 cast their votes (61.06%). The blank votes accounted for 0.82% and null votes 0.69%, as per the MAI results.
