“There is one aspect that I think is a source of great pride for this force. No other can claim what we can: we have not strayed a single millimeter from what matters. We have not shied away and have brought the crucial issues to debate, such as salaries, pensions, women’s rights, access to housing, and the National Health Service,” stated Paulo Raimundo.
For Paulo Raimundo, this stance will translate into greater voter confidence in the CDU.
Speaking to journalists, the communist leader expressed that there is a “recognition” of the CDU’s work that is gradually taking hold.
While in the midst of a campaign walk in Barreiro, Setúbal district, Paulo Raimundo paused for a toast with Moscatel wine. When someone suggested toasting to the CDU, the communist leader proposed it be to “the people.”
Minutes later, he dismissed Luís Montenegro, leader of the AD, as the beacon of the country, claiming that place for the people he had toasted.
“The beacon of our country has always been our people, who will show the path that needs to be imposed in the country,” said Paulo Raimundo to journalists.
Discussing the campaign, the PCP’s secretary-general noted that, while following “the major headlines of each,” the CDU does not deviate from “what is fundamental—salaries, pensions, housing, health, children’s rights.”
“And that is fundamental for us. Others do not do the same, but each assumes their own responsibility,” he stated.
In his speech at the end of the campaign walk, the secretary-general returned to the idea of the CDU as a force for peace, with a particular focus on Palestine, accusing various governments of ignoring the situation in Gaza.
“It’s time to end the hypocrisy and cynicism of all those war-mongering governments that don’t care about the Palestinian people,” he said.
