“Mário Centeno should not be reappointed to the Banco de Portugal.” This is the position of André Ventura, leader of Chega, who conveyed his message via social media and addressed a “plea to the Prime Minister,” Luís Montenegro.
To support this statement, the opposition leader emphasized: “We are tired of socialist ‘boys’ colonizing the state apparatus and supposedly independent institutions.”
He further made an appeal to the head of government: “Do not reappoint him, enough of cronies and incompetence.”
It should be noted that on Sunday, Luís Montenegro confirmed the government will announce the name of the new governor of the Banco de Portugal after the Council of Ministers meeting on Thursday.

“During the next week, we will take that position and therefore, at the Council of Ministers on Thursday, we will announce our position,” he said.
Luís Montenegro was speaking to journalists upon his arrival at Herdade do Chão da Lagoa, situated in the mountains overlooking Funchal.
Without revealing any names, the Prime Minister only stated that the profile of the governor of the Banco de Portugal “does not change over time.” “It is always the same; they must be – and are – a competent person, someone who guarantees the fulfillment of the functions of a central bank in what today, on a European scale, is also defined,” he stated.

The assurance was given by the Prime Minister upon arrival at the Chão da Lagoa Festival organized by PSD/Madeira. Luís Montenegro was also questioned about his expectations of the President of the Republic concerning the nationality law.

Additionally, during the press conference following last Thursday’s Council of Ministers, where the announcement of the new governor was anticipated, the Finance Minister was questioned about the silence on this decision. He merely stated that “the government will make a decision next week.”

The mandate of Mário Centeno as governor of the Banco de Portugal (BdP) ended Sunday, but the government will only decide on the position next week.
