The Portuguese Communist Party (PCP) has announced via a press statement that its general secretary, Paulo Raimundo, will present the conclusions of the party’s recent meeting. A press conference is scheduled to take place at 6:00 PM at the national headquarters in Lisbon.

This marks the first meeting of the communist leadership following the legislative elections, during which the PCP recorded its worst-ever performance, securing just 3.03% of the vote and electing three deputies: Paulo Raimundo, Paula Santos, and Alfredo Maia.

Last year, just three days after the March 2024 legislative elections, Paulo Raimundo declared at a Central Committee meeting that the party would table a motion of rejection against the AD Government’s program.

The rejection motion was later voted down in the Assembly of the Republic, with PSD, Chega, CDS, and PAN opposing it, PS abstaining, and BE, PCP, and Livre supporting it.

Following the announcement of the election results this Sunday, Paulo Raimundo emphasized the necessity for “a common action of democrats and patriots” to confront “right-wing politics” in light of the outcomes for AD, Chega, and IL in these legislative elections.

“This is not the time to ally with the right and support its anti-popular policies. This is the time for fighting,” he affirmed.

The AD emerged victorious in Sunday’s legislative election, securing 89 seats. Meanwhile, PS and Chega both garnered 58 seats, tying in parliamentary representation.

The Liberal Initiative remains the fourth-largest political force, gaining one additional seat since 2024 for a total of nine. The Livre party improved its position, increasing from four to six seats.

The CDU lost one seat, leaving it with three deputies, while the Left Bloc is now represented by a single member, the same as PAN, which maintained one deputy.

The JPP from Madeira managed to secure a seat in the parliament.

These results are provisional and do not yet include the votes of overseas residents, which will be disclosed on May 28.
