Cereals, coffee, cheese… Breakfast price has skyrocketed in just one year.

The price of food continues to rise, as breakfast now costs more compared to a year ago. This week, DECO PROTeste disclosed that whole grain cereals, coffee, sliced Flemish cheese, and crustless bread saw the most significant price increases over the past week.

Additionally, “cereals and coffee are indeed among the biggest increases over the last year,” highlights the consumer protection organization in a statement.

Return to Routine Becomes Costlier

Data from DECO PROTeste reveal that the “typical return to routine in September is more expensive: a year ago, on September 11th, the shopping cart cost 13.05 euros less (5.73 percent less).”

“And it was some of the products that make up a common breakfast that registered a higher percentage price increase, both in the last week (see details below) and over the past year,” the organization concludes.

Which Products Increased the Most?

In the last week, between September 3rd and 10th, the products with the most significant percentage price increases were whole grain cereals, roasted ground coffee, packaged sliced Flemish cheese, and crustless bread.

Comparing this week’s prices with the first week of the year, January 1, 2025, the biggest percentage price increases were seen in products like broccoli (45% more), roasted ground coffee (40% more), oranges (31% more), and eggs (28% more).

Since DECO PROTeste started this analysis on January 5, 2022, the highest percentage increases were in veal for cooking (92% more), eggs (81% more), oranges (81% more), and roasted ground coffee (78% more).

Grocery Basket Also More Expensive

The price of the grocery basket monitored by DECO PROTeste saw a slight increase in the last week. Between September 3rd and 10th, the grocery basket became 9 cents (0.04% more) more expensive, now costing 240.65 euros. This is one of the highest prices since the consumer protection organization began tracking the cost of this essential goods basket.

At the beginning of this year, on January 1st, the grocery basket cost 4.48 euros less (1.9 percent less). Back in January 2022, consumers spent 52.95 euros less (28.21% less) to buy exactly the same food products.
