Under the theme “More wages and rights – Another path is possible!”, a demonstration organized by the union central led by Tiago Oliveira is set to take place in two locations in the country.
In Porto, the gathering is scheduled for 10:30 AM, beginning at Praça do Marquês and concluding at Praça D. João I, while in Lisbon, it is set for 3:00 PM, starting at Marquês de Pombal and ending at Restauradores.
Speaking to Lusa, Ana Pires, a member of the Executive Committee of the General Confederation of Portuguese Workers – Intersindical (CGTP), expressed expectations for thousands of workers, pensioners, and families to join Saturday’s protest against the labor law revision. She anticipated that the union central would “give due fight” if the Government does not withdraw the draft from discussion.
To ensure the participation of workers who are scheduled to work on weekends, several strike notices have been issued, notably in the commerce and services, industry, hotel, and catering sectors, as noted by the person in charge of the CGTP’s protest action.
The Intersindical Federation of Metalworking, Chemical, Electrical, Pharmaceutical, Pulp, Paper, Printing, Energy, and Mining Industries (Fiequimetal) is among those with a strike notice in effect from 12:00 AM to 11:59 PM on Saturday.
The CGTP has repeatedly stated that the Government’s draft represents “a true regression” in workers’ rights, identifying some proposed amendments as unconstitutional.
At the last Social Concertation meeting on September 10, the Government pledged to present a new version of the draft, with “developments” in matters related to family and parenthood, as indicated by the secretary-general of the General Union of Workers (UGT) and the president of the Business Confederation of Portugal (CIP).
