Chega appoints Rui Afonso to chair the Budget and Finance Committee

The Chega party will preside over four parliamentary committees, including National Defense, with deputy Pedro Pessanha returning to his role, and Education, where deputy Manuela Tender will continue her tenure.

In the previous legislative session, Chega held the presidency of three committees: National Defense, chaired by deputy Pedro Pessanha; Education and Science, headed by deputy Manuela Tender; and Local Power and Territorial Cohesion, under deputy Bruno Nunes, who will no longer preside over any committees.

Last week, the Assembly of the Republic unanimously approved the composition of the 15 permanent parliamentary committees for the new legislative session, along with the number of deputies in each and their distribution among different parliamentary groups.

This decision stemmed from a proposal by the President of the Assembly of the Republic, José Pedro Aguiar-Branco, following a conference of leaders.

Of the 15 permanent parliamentary committees, the PSD, as the largest group, will have seven presidencies: Constitutional Affairs, Rights, Freedoms and Guarantees; Foreign Affairs and Portuguese Communities; Agriculture and Fisheries; Environment and Energy; Culture, Communication, Youth and Sports; State Reform and Local Power; and Infrastructure, Mobility, and Housing.

Chega will preside over four committees: National Defense, Budget and Finance, Education, and Transparency and Deputies’ Statute.

The Socialist Party (PS) will likewise have four presidencies: European Affairs; Economy and Territorial Cohesion; Health; and Work, Social Security, and Inclusion.

The assignment of committee presidencies, as well as the number of deputies per parliamentary group in each committee, is based on the representativeness of each group.
