Chega will go ahead with a request to set up a parliamentary commission of inquiry into the case of the Portuguese-Brazilian twins treated at Santa Maria Hospital in Lisbon, the party’s president announced today.
“I took the decision to ask the party’s technical services to proceed with a request for a parliamentary commission of inquiry into the case of the twins,” said André Ventura, in a statement to journalists at the Portuguese Parliament.
The Chega leader justified the decision on the grounds that “it is important that there is scrutiny, regardless of the political decision-makers involved” and because “this case has cost taxpayers several million euros”.
Chega decided to move forward with this request on the day that the report of the General Inspection of Health Activities (IGAS) became known, which concluded that access to the neuropediatric consultation of the Portuguese-Brazilian twins treated at Santa Maria Hospital with a drug worth millions of euros was illegal.
In addition to this case, Chega also wants this committee of inquiry to investigate “whether there are similar cases in Portugal in other parts of the country, in other areas, which have cost the taxpayer millions”.
André Ventura has indicated that he will contact the PS and PSD benches to try to get them to support his proposal, saying he hopes for a consensus on the matter.
If this is not possible and the proposal is rejected in plenary, the president of Chega has indicated that he will go ahead with a binding commission.
