Chega meets National Council in September to discuss candidacy to Belém

The meeting is scheduled to take place at the Fórum Lisboa, beginning at 20:30. On the agenda are discussions regarding the presidential elections and other topics.

In an interview on Tuesday, André Ventura acknowledged that he is currently more inclined towards running for President of the Republic than he was “two or three weeks ago.” However, he expressed concerns about the suitability of an opposition leader concurrently being a presidential candidate, saying, “I will make a decision soon,” without specifying an exact date.

Prior to the legislative elections, Ventura announced his intention to run, but seemed to reconsider after his party, Chega, strengthened its position, becoming the second largest force in parliament. As of yet, Ventura has not publicly specified a timeline for Chega’s decision regarding the presidential elections next January, whether the party will field its own candidate or support another.

Ventura was a candidate in the 2021 presidential election when Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa was re-elected for a second term in Belém. He garnered 11.90% of the votes, finishing third behind Ana Gomes.
